Dr. Zhou is completely dedicated to empowering her patients to return to a renewed, pain free and healthier life. She provides natural, effective relief for back pain caused by:

  • Muscle strains
  • Muscle spasms
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sciatica
  • Osteoporosis
  • Degenerative disc
  • Herniated disc
  • Fibromyalgia

Acute back pain – usually comes from muscle strains, spasms, or acute back injury. In Chinese Medicine, the pain is considered to be caused by blocked or stagnant energy (Chi or Qi) in the pathways of the body. Dr. Zhou focuses on restoring a smooth flow of energy and thus fresh blood to the body to remove this “stagnation”, and uses distal points (hand and ear) to open channels to diminish the pain. It is not uncommon for patients to experience immediate, significant relief from back pain.

Chronic back pain – can be very complicated. Treatment is determined by each patient’s specific medical history and unique examination - including tongue, pulse and palpation. The principle of treatment is to enhance circulation in the lumbar area and promote tissue regeneration. Based on Dr. Zhou’s many years of experience, most disc herniations have developed through cumulative degenerative processes rather than acute injuries. For those degenerative changes in the back, treatment often involves balancing the whole body’s energy, as well as treating underlying deficiencies. Surgery and medication are not a solution for degenerative conditions. In other cases, upper or lower back pain could be caused by a deep seated emotional or stress-related problem, or aggravated by general tension, lack of sleep or fatigue, such as is the case with fibromyalgia. Persistent chronic back pain can also affect the nervous and immune system, as well as precipitating depression and cause the brain to perceive even more pain. Since acupuncture is a holistic medicine, Dr. Zhou treats both physical and emotional disorders in order to avoid the harmful consequences of prolonged pain.

Dr. Zhou emphasizes the multiple benefits of combining herbal medicine with acupuncture, to strengthen circulation by nourishing the body’s tissues and eliminating muscle fatigue, which, in turn, prevents more injury in chronic or recurrent cases.

In addition to treatment, Dr. Zhou believes it is important to make lifestyle changes, including adjusting poor posture, discontinuing improper or heavy lifting, sitting or standing in one position for a long time, which can all be contributing factors in causing muscles to become weak, rigid and inflexible. More importantly, they leave the person susceptible to upper or lower back injury such as muscle sprain or strain and sometimes inflammation of the nerves or discs.

We welcome all of those who seek acupuncture as an alternative solution to alleviating back pain and reducing their reliance on medications, as well as those patients who wish to avoid invasive surgical procedures. The majority of patients fully realize the benefits of acupuncture and herbal medicine when they are able to live a more enriched life pain free!
